About the event

All participants must register individually. Each person may sign up for up to three workshops in the Imagine Mexico series.

This workshop is designed for individual adults and is not intended for groups. If you are interested in arranging a private session for your organization, team, or group, please get in touch with us directly.

Join us for an exclusive workshop where participants learn to create flowers using corn husks.

About the workshop

In Mexican culture, corn husks are repurposed for a variety of creative uses. The best-known use is as a wrapper for tamales. They are also crafted into decorative items and unique crafts. Artisans use corn husks to create elaborate flowers, ornaments, and even dolls, highlighting the creativity of Mexican traditions. These decorative pieces often symbolize culture, reflecting the deep connection between the people and their agricultural practices. In our workshop, we will use corn husks to create flowers.

Please note: Crafting these flowers requires firmly pulling and tying the corn husks with a line. This project requires moderate hand strength and steady pressure, so it may not be suitable for individuals with limited hand mobility.

About the Artist

Workshop led by Danny T

Danny is a folk and traditional artist who works with various media. Raised in Puebla and New York, he developed a passion for crafts from a young age. Growing up with his grandparents, he was deeply immersed in Mexican traditions, and one of his earliest memories is his family coming together to prepare offerings for an altar honoring their departed loved ones. This rich cultural background shapes his artistic practice, allowing him to explore and celebrate his heritage through his work.

Additional Information

Free admission. All materials are provided. Please note: Space is limited; advance registration is required. The workshop is for adults.

This workshop is part of the Imagine Mexico: Art Enrichment Workshop series, made possible by the West Harlem Development Corporation, the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature, and by The Mosaic Network and Fund (MNF).
