Mano a Mano’s Día de Muertos celebration at St. Mark’s Church-in-the-Bowery in the East Village of New York City is a free, family-friendly event featuring a massive community altar (ofrenda), live music, traditional crafts, and an authentic Mexican marketplace.
The celebration of Día de Muertos is a cherished tradition honoring our ancestors and loved ones who have passed.
Key Features of the Event

The Community Altar: At the center is a large, elaborate ofrenda with traditional offerings including marigolds (cempasúchil), candles, sugar skulls, and pan de muerto bread. Visitors are encouraged to bring copies of photographs (unframed and unlaminated), as well as notes and letters to honor their ancestors and loved ones.

Cultural Workshops and Activities: The celebration includes interactive activities where participants can learn to create traditional Mexican paper flowers and commemorative pins, among other crafts.

Live Music and Performances: The celebration includes performances of regional Mexican folk music, such as Son Jarocho and Mariachi, as well as soulful vocalists.

Mexican Marketplace: A bustling market offers folk art, papel picado, and traditional Mexican food and breads for purchase.

About the Day of the Dead
The Day of the Dead is a beloved Mexican tradition celebrated since pre-Hispanic times. During this time, families welcome the souls of their departed loved ones. Día de Muertos can last for a week and includes building Ofrendas, also called altars adorned with marigolds, copal incense, foods, pan de muertos bread, candles, sugar skulls, photos, and mementos to honor the deceased.
