This year, we’ll create six large Ofrendas, three of which will be displayed in public spaces in collaboration with our partner organizations.

This is the beautiful Ofrenda created by Danny Tepi in collaboration with Andrea Arroyo and Aurelio del Muro, where visitors dedicated photographs, cards, letters, and notes to those who have departed. Here is our ofrenda and many of those notes and pictures. On this Día de Muertos, we celebrate the lives of those who have left us and the community their presence has touched.

OUR OFRENDA
Artists Danny Tepi, Andrea Arroyo, and Aurelio del Muro collaborated in our studio for several weeks to create our Ofrenda for the Day of the Dead. The inspiration for the ofrenda came from the winged hearts of Guanajuato and the Talavera from Puebla. Many Mexican New Yorkers come from Puebla, which was the hardest-hit group within the Mexican community during the COVID-19 pandemic in New York. Through this ofrenda, we pay tribute to them and all the departed.

La inspiración para la ofrenda vino de los corazones alados de Guanajuato y la Talavera de Puebla. Muchos neoyorquinos mexicanos provienen de Puebla, que fue el grupo más afectado dentro de la comunidad mexicana durante la pandemia de COVID-19 en Nueva York. As part of our annual Día de Muertos, we will install a public art COVID-19 memorial this year. The memorial is being created by Naming The Lost Memorials, Mano a Mano: MexCulture, City Lore, and Great Small Works, with support from the Mellon Foundation. It will be displayed on the fence at St. Mark’s Church-in-the-Bowery and feature artwork created by community partners Inside Change, Parole Preparation Project, Oye Group, and St. Mark’s community. The public is welcome to come and view the memorial and participate in the event.
